How I Conquered Worry And Stopped Overthinking From Taking Over My Life

Not too long ago, I had plenty of reasons to be worried.

On top of being knee-deep in $80,000 in credit card debt, I also was on the verge of living on the street.

My hypnotherapy practice was on its last legs, and several of my other businesses had already failed.

Worse, my marriage was also falling apart and my 'friends' were nowhere to be seen.

 And the more I ruminated about my problems, the more they chipped away at my peace of mind...  

...to say nothing of my deteriorating physical health.

Suffice to say, that I wasn't in a good place. 

But some part of me longed to BREAK FREE from this situation.

As beat down as I was, something inside of me wanted to push back against the avalanche of challenges that I faced. 

I strived to find the light at the end of MY tunnel and finally stop worrying.

Here's what I learned on my journey...

3 Ways I Stopped Worrying And Started Enjoying Life Again:

    I Fact-Checked My Thoughts

    Given my situation, my mind was in a defensive state. I always felt like I had to be vigilant against perceived threats around me, or else things would get worse.

    My brain would project worst-case scenarios and play automatic negative thought loops. So I trained myself to challenge these thoughts by questioning how realistic they were.

    So whenever I had a thought like "I'm going to end up alone, homeless and broke," for example, I took a mental step back and came up with a counter-argument and assessed the facts.

    Then I replaced that initial thought with a more realistic statement like, "You're down, but NOT out. This isn't the end of the world and you still have options."

    I Removed My Ego From The Equation

    Looking back, my need to {quote-sign}have it all{quote-sign} played a big part of the problem. My ego was impossible to satisfy, and my mind was always too focused on the future as a result.

    The more I ignored the present, the more I was consumed by the need to be "good enough" or "better" than other people. That created all sorts of unnecessary drama and made me lose sight of what was really important.

    And so, I learned the art of stillness by taking time every day to pause for a while and tune into my internal state. This is also known as mindfulness, which is the practice of acknowledging your feelings and leaning into them fully.

    After some time, it felt like someone had reached inside my mind and turned off the "worry switch." My newfound mental clarity allowed me to drop my ego, enjoy the present, and take action.

    I Created A Sense of Control in My Life

    As my situation spiraled out of control, I was consumed by worrisome 'what-if' thoughts. Eventually, I realized that stressing about the unknown possibilities only made things worse.

    So I disrupted that kind of thinking by taking responsibility whenever I could. I'd write down all the things bothering me so I could get them on paper, which in itself took some of the pressure off.

    Then, I listed down all the things I could do (be it big or small) to change even one part of whatever was worrying me. This gave me a sense of control (and more importantly, HOPE) even though I knew I couldn't just magically change things overnight.

    And the other thing I did was maintain a sense of structure in my everyday life. This structure was based on a daily routine built on tasks I could do every day to change my situation, not to mention rituals for self-care and meditation.

    Doing this reminded me that as chaotic as things were, I could rely on this structure to keep me stable and grounded.

Embrace The Moment

For the longest time, I was anywhere but in the present moment.

It was honestly a scary place to be in...

...because it meant having to confront my feelings and inner state.

When I learned to observe what was going on inside myself without judging or labeling, it set me FREE.  

And it finally helped me let go of the 'what-if's and 'what could be's.

I could focus on what was in front of me...

Creating these small moments allows you to pause and make better choices - especially during stressful situations. Instead of reacting to negative thoughts or emotions, you can simply step back and observe them.

And it's this small but powerful shift that changed everything for me.

Receive and Give Support

Like a lot of living creatures on this planet, humans need a social circle to thrive. A Harvard study that spanned 80 years found that a strong network of family and friends was a massive predictor of a good life.

In other words, people are wired to crave a human connection. We function at our best when we feel supported and valued by the people around us. Spending time with the important people in our lives gives us the chance to cry on their shoulders, laugh with them, and enjoy life together.

On the flip side, giving support to others can also offer us stress relief.

The act of giving some form of service (e.g., volunteer work) has a positive impact on a person's well-being, both mentally and physically. And more importantly, it helps us shift our mind away from a worrisome state to a more peaceful one.
