10 Practical Tips For Meditation Beginners

Today’s world is full of stresses. From the time we wake up until we fall asleep again, we are under a constant barrage of noise, sounds, sights, and thoughts. Meditation allows us to make our mind calm and peaceful.

When our mind is peaceful, we are free from worries and able to experience true happiness. As we train in meditation, we become more able to control our minds and emotions instead of having our emotions control us and our moods.

Learning to meditate can seem overwhelming. With these ten tips, you will soon find yourself in a happier state of mind and realize just how simple meditation is.

1| Pick Your Meditation Spot

Choose a spot that is going to be strictly for meditating. This should be a spot that is free from distractions and that is easily modified into a relaxing atmosphere.

2| Choose The Right Time

Practice meditating at the same time every day. Make an appointment with yourself and keep it. The best way to promote peace into your whole day is to meditate first thing in the morning, however, if you are looking to get a better sleep it is wise to meditate at the end of the day.

3| Sit Straight And Relaxed

You don’t need to sit in a special pose in order to meditate. A cushion on the floor, a stool, or a chair is all fine. It is important to be still and relaxed and ensure your spine is upright. Mind and body are intertwined and your mind will drift more if you are in a slumped position.

4| Start Small

Don’t believe that you need to accomplish anything specific the first time you meditate. Meditation takes practice. Start with committing to five minutes a day and work from there. Meditation is like a muscle. Rather than overwork it, you want to build it up.

5| Notice Your Body

A great thing for beginning meditators to do is to take notice of the body as the meditative state begins. Once your mind quiets, put all your attention into your body. Beginning at the feet and slowly moving up your entire body. Include all body parts, internal organs as well.

6| Take Note Of The Frustration

Feelings of frustration are very common among beginners. Don’t allow frustration over struggling to quiet your mind to overtake you. Instead, focus on your breathing and let the frustrations go.

7| Choose A Focus

An effective way to encourage your mind to quiet is to focus on something. You can play quiet meditative music, or choose to focus on an image or your breathing. Whatever you choose to give your focus to, notice every detail about it and allow it to become all your mind sees. This will give you control over your mind.

8| Don’t Get Caught Up In Meditating Perfectly

There really is no right or wrong way to meditate. Just because something works for other people doesn’t mean it is going to work for you. Don’t get caught up on the how. Just relax and meditate.

9| Experiment

If you find yourself getting distracted in the room, position or focal point you chose, experiment with something else until you find the combination that provides you with optimal relaxation.

10| When You Are Done, Smile

Smiling is a great way to feel happy. You have shown yourself that you are important to you. You have found a few minutes to focus on nothing but yourself and your happiness. That is worth smiling about.

Meditation is a tool. It can help with chronic pain, help you sleep better, feel happier, and be more peaceful and present. Learning to meditate is a great way to learn how to control your emotions and promote peace and happiness around you. By following the ten tips above, you will soon find yourself on a journey towards inner peace.
