According to a study conducted by Amherst College, “Healthy relationships have been shown to increase our happiness, improve health and reduce stress. Studies show that people with healthy relationships have more happiness and less stress.”
We have different individuals with distinct characters on earth, yet most of us still wish to get along irrespective of our differences. Humans are sociable creatures. Aristotle made this remark more than 2000 years ago, and it remains a basic reality about human life. Cooperation amongst ourselves is at the core of our lives and civilizations.
Having good relationships with others offers a multitude of advantages. It improves our physical and mental well-being, brings us solace through difficult times, and enhances our lives. We feel more at ease and devoted to getting along with others; we feel like we belong. That being said, it is best to get along with people, and here are ten tips for doing just that:
Listen To Others
The willingness to listen to others is the most fundamental communication skill. Instead of dominating the conversation, take the time to listen to what others have to say. Interrupting or talking over other individuals is not a great idea when trying to get along.
According to the Harvard Business Review, “It is better to say something substantial rather than engage in meaningless banter. So, it is better to listen to what the conversation is about before speaking.”
Don’t Always Attempt To Change People
According to Psychology Today, “You cannot change them. It is not your responsibility, nor is it your business to change others. You can only modify your interactions with others. If you do not like how someone acts, you can arrange things so that you interact with them as little as possible.”
Don’t Always Complain Around People
If you stopped complaining around difficult individuals, they would quit moaning around you. People tend to imitate what they see. They will retaliate if they hear nasty words. If you feel compelled to say something unpleasant, don’t.
Keep smiling while you’re with difficult individuals, even though it seems like an easy thing to accomplish. They’ll be curious as to what you’re up to. Additionally, smiling conveys to people the notion that you are a lovely person to be around.
A Good Sense Of Humor Helps
A little laughing may go a long way, and a grin can relieve stress while a scowl might exacerbate it. Try to laugh it off if someone pranks you. Grin at someone who is gloomy. Be aware of your demeanor (facial expression). People will brighten up when they see you approaching if you are consistently pleasant and positive.
Make It Clear That You Wish To Get Along
Some people do not take hints. Some people are unable to decipher body language. For these folks, simply saying, “I genuinely want us to get along, and I want to back you up and support you,” with a pleasant smile and tone, works wonders.
A Random Act Of Kindness Helps
Being nice is a reward in and of itself. It might be as easy as bringing coffee to the office or volunteering to assist someone with difficulty carrying anything. This demonstrates that you care about others, and it makes people want to be around you.
Compliment People More
Everyone enjoys being praised for something. It doesn’t have to be a major issue. It might be a compliment on a car or a suit that someone is wearing. It doesn’t have to be about what someone is wearing all of the time. It might be a result of anything they’ve done. For example, “Good job on making that promotion.”
Sometimes Prioritize The Needs Of Others Before Your Own
People must sometimes make sacrifices and put the needs of others ahead of their own. This means providing whatever is required at the moment. It might be your money, your time, or your willingness to listen. Support others since you never know when you’ll need help.
Allow Others To Express Themselves
Rather than sharing your experiences all the time, let others share theirs. Individuals lash out at somebody to stand out enough to be noticed the only way they know-how. Rather than being the one sharing your experiences, permit others. When they articulate their thoughts, they bond with you as opposed to battling against you.
No matter what you do, people ultimately decide on their own if they wish to get along with you. But applying these ten tips will put you in a better place with people.
