Your conscious mind processes what you see and what you feel. It makes decisions. It reacts to the outcomes. It plays a role in how you think and the decisions that you make. However, your conscious mind only plays a part. Your subconscious mind plays a larger role.

Your subconscious mind draws from past experiences to determine how to deal with a current situation. It doesn’t possess the cognitive ability to process thoughts, it can simply recall a memory to influence how you judge a situation. That could be a negative or positive thing. Unfortunately, while less cognitive, your subconscious mind is more powerful than the conscious. For example, it’s three o’clock in the afternoon and you feel your energy and focus dipping.

Your conscious mind suggests a cup of coffee. You make moves to brew some java and your subconscious mind chimes in and questions whether that’s the wisest choice you can make. It’s a bit late in the day for all that caffeine, you might have trouble sleeping. The two are debating. This is a basic conundrum you face, there are much bigger situations that your conscious and subconscious mind may argue about.

Early Subconscious Programming

Your subconscious mind goes back to your childhood. You go through many experiences and whether they are bad or good, they are lodged in your subconscious. You may move on as you grow up, but your subconscious never forgets. It can throw up those feelings at any moment. Whether you realize it or not, your subconscious mind is influencing your emotions, feelings, and decisions.

You make decisions based on the thoughts and established norms programmed into your psyche. It sounds safe, yet this can prevent you from making the right decisions. Which can result in consequences that create regret, pain, and suffering. In the grand scheme of things, this habitual thinking can cause you to feel insecure, inadequate, and unworthy. It influences your self-confidence. It can hold you back when all you want to do is move forward. So, even if you desperately want to do and be better, you’re powerless to do so.

You may have been poor at something in your childhood or had someone suggest you’re bad at it. That sticks in there and it can manifest down the line as you attempt something similar.

So, you’re speaking to a client trying to close a deal and suddenly you’re filled with panic, believing that you aren’t capable of closing the deal. You may have had a poor experience speaking publicly in your past, and as you step onto the stage to speak publicly you are overcome with anxiety over it. We also cope with failures differently because of our past situations.

Overcoming Your Subconscious Mind

Luckily, you can overcome your subconscious mind. If you struggle with confidence issues you can eliminate the issue by reprogramming your subconscious. You have to quell your negative habits and learn how to actively go against your programming.

There are several ways you can do this. While some people feel that therapy is the right approach, you can also invest in self-help material, whether it’s a book, podcast or a seminar.

You might find a sympathetic ear and guidance from friends or family is helpful.

You can take plenty of steps to build your self-confidence, but if you don’t deal with the issues at the root in your subconscious mind it will be difficult to make it stick. You have to transform those negative energies into positive ones.

If you are motivated to boost your confidence and overcome your subconscious mind, then you will. You have to draw from that motivation to address the lingering self-confidence issues residing in your subconscious mind.
